Boxing Promoter Insists World Champion Fight Between Tim Tszyu And Jermell Charlo Is Still Planned

Prominent boxing promoter reveals devastation at Tim Tszyu’s camp for missing Las Vegas megaabout… but insists a fight with world champion Jermell Charlo is still planned

  • George Rose squashed that Charlo’s fight failed
  • The promoter believed that Tszyu would have surprised the champion
  • Rose says blockbuster fight is still on the cards

Boxing promoter George Rose has opened up about the heartbreak of Tim Tszyu’s fight with undisputed champion Jermell Charlo, but insists the fight is still on the line when the Australian finishes Tony Harrison.

Tszyu was scheduled to fight Charlo in January for the American’s IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO super welterweight belts, in a fight in which he promised a knockout.

However, the successful world title fight was called off when Charlo broke two bones in his hand while training in December.

Tszyu was then paired with American Tony Harrison, whom he will fight in Sydney next month, with the interim WBO super welterweight belt on the line.

Rose is looking forward to the event at Qudos Bank Arena on Sunday, March 12, but also expressed extreme disappointment that Charlo’s fight was cancelled.

“We love doing events in Australia, I’ll be honest, we were really excited to go to Vegas, everyone was,” Rose said on SEN’s Them’s Fightin Words.

“If you’ve seen Tim’s progression in recent years, he was planning to go abroad throughout the Covid period, he was ready to go and take on those international fights.”

“But due to restricted travel during Covid, it didn’t end up happening, as soon as we got out of it, then the opportunity to fight for the undisputed world title (came), we were very excited.”

“Then Charlo gets injured, luckily in a short period we’ve been able to turn it around and get the fight here, bring an international in Tony Harrison here in such a short time.”

Rose thought Tszyu could surprise one of the most respected fighters in the world and take the undisputed title.

“We were sneaking out the back door, we were sneaking up on Charlo, obviously he knows who Tim is, but a lot of American fighters don’t respect Australian fighters and don’t respect what they’ve done to get where they are.” they’re in,’ Rose added.

“It was going to be perfect, sneak in the back door, beat Charlo, become the undisputed world champion, then everyone knows and everyone realizes what a star Tim is.”

‘A win over Tony Harrison will still give him a lot of credibility in the States, but again, it probably takes a bit of that sneaky factor that we had going for it.

“It’s still in the cards after a win over Tony Harrison to go there and fight Charlo in Las Vegas.”

Harrison, who touches down in Sydney on Tuesday, says he will take the fight with the Australian very seriously, but says Tszyu’s style is nothing he hasn’t seen before.

“Tim is a very tough fighter to be honest, but he’s very basic to me,” he said.

It’s someone I see around the corner.

‘It’s like someone in the park when I’m fighting someone in the park. There is nothing special about it. His defense is not stellar, his offense is not stellar.’
